Last Thursday saw our annual Presentation evening where we celebrated with over 120 of our participants who have achieved an Award at either Bronze, Silver or Gold in the past twelve months. The weather was not kind to us and I know it was disappointing for those unable to make it to the evening. Don’t worry, you will receive your certificates and badges in assemblies over the next couple of weeks. I would like to congratulate all of you who have shown commitment to completing your Award; it is a fabulous achievement, especially for our eleven Gold participants. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all the staff who helped out with expeditions or acted as assessors for the other three sections of the Award. I would like to especially thank Miss Borman who co-ordinates the Gold Award. We were delighted to hear that seven of our Gold Award holders will be attending their Presentation together at Buckingham Palace in May.
Year 9 Launch
The launch of the Award to Y9 is happening slightly earlier this year. In the past twelve months the Award has changed their enrolment rules so that young people can be enrolled at Bronze in the academic year in which they turn 14 rather than waiting for their 14th birthday. A letter has gone out to Y9 this week with details of the launch evening which will take place on Monday 12th March at 6.30pm in the school hall. There will be a short presentation with an opportunity for questions at the end. The main reason for bringing forward the enrolment date is to give young people more time to complete their volunteering, physical and skills section. The Bronze expeditions will remain in the summer term of Y10. I would encourage students who are interested to attend the meeting on Monday with their parents/carers. If you are unable to attend, please email for further information.
Year 10 Bronze
We will shortly be starting the expedition training in preparation for our first expedition which takes places in May. Participants should check the Google Classroom for DofE closely over the next week to find out training dates and times. All expedition training is mandatory so if you are unable to attend on your given date, please contact me so your training can be re-arranged. You will not be allowed to go on expedition if you do not attend ALL training sessions. There will be a parents’ information evening on Thursday 22nd March at 6.30 in the school hall where I will outline how we deliver the expedition section. The expectation is that participants attend with their parents’/carers. Further information about the expeditions and medical consent forms will be given out at that time. Although the focus of the evening is the expedition section, staff will be available to answer any questions you may have. If you are unable to attend, please email and information packs can be emailed to you.
Year 11 Silver
In the midst of all their examination preparation 44 of our Y11 are working towards their Silver Award. Their final expedition will be in June after their exams have finished and we will be meeting shortly to plan their expedition routes. Watch Google classroom for time and date of planning session.
Year 12/13 Gold
Miss Borman is busy working with our largest group of Gold participants to date to prepare them for their expeditions which are extremely challenging endeavours. They have completed route plans and advanced training to ensure they are fully prepared for anything the Brecon Beacons and the Lake District might decide to throw at them.
